Maybe I Think I Hate “Maybe”

Maybe, the most overused and misused word in the English language.

It’s used as an excuse for non-action. There is a saying in Spanish that goes like this: “Desde que se inventaron las excusas, todo el mundo queda bien”. Loosely translated it says: Ever since excuses were invented, no one is ever rude.

It is used as an excuse not to make a decision… like “Let me think about it”… when really… they are not and they mean “no”.

Yes, it is used as a means of postponement to making a commitment to anything. I personally find it frustrating. It’s hard to plan anything on a “maybe”.

When I hear “maybe”, I immediately translate it to “no, I don’t want to”… or “no, I wont be able to”…and invariably I’m correct. I feel like saying “just say no, I really have no time to waste”. I will just move on.

I find that I use it very little or not at all; instead tending to make decisions right on the spot. I do try to understand that not everyone is like me. However, I believe that if more people would commit right away to “doing” instead of “thinking about it”… they would do so much more in their life.

There is nothing like buying the ticket… once that step is done.. you usually make it happen!
