Decide and Let Go

Decisions…Decisions…

There is something romantic about the conquering hero putting it all on the line to accomplish his goal. It feels like the ultimate act of faith.

One of my favorite moments in history is when Hernando Cortez, having arrived in Mexico from Cuba, made the decision to sink all but one of his eleven ships. Effectively caging all of them there. Crazy!

Yes, it was a crazy, irrevocable decision, and a drastic way to force his men to forge ahead and fight to conquer the Aztec Empire.

There just was no turning back! The decision was made for them. Like it or not they were staying in that strange new world.

Obviously, this is an extreme example of decisive action; but not unlike the decisions we might sometimes have to make in our business or personal lives…when livelihoods might be on the line or when suffering is eminent.

There is an undisputed fact that the moment of absolute certainty is rare and most likely never arrives. Therefore, we must make decisions according to the circumstances and to the best of our abilities at the moment. Then never look back with regret; there is no point in regrets.

It’s said that hindsight is 20/20. Yes, true; but to get it right all the time, we would also need foresight…and foresight is only a “good guess”.

Therefore, all we can do is make the decision, hope for the best, and then just let it go.
