Clear As Water

Not too long ago, I spent some time in Bimini…a tiny island in the Bahamas. The ocean water is so clear there… so transparent, that I could actually see a shark or a stingray coming a mile away. However, in looking at the transparent waters, I noticed that even though I was able to see the smallest rock and fish as I was standing there, the moment that I stirred the water, I wasn’t able to see so clearly. The water had to be calm in order for me to see through it and see my toes. I also noticed that there comes a moment that no matter how clear and calm the water, if it’s very deep, I couldn’t see the bottom. I couldn’t see past a certain point unless you dove into it.

The metaphor between the water and humans is very evident to me. It is why we must calm down to see things clearly. We must also sometimes dive in and explore deep within us to be able to see and find the answers. Because if we stay bobbing on the surface we won’t be able to see past a certain point.

We can wade on the water and stir the sand until it clouds our vision or stay still and let the sand settle until we can see clearly. We can also let ourselves sink…breathing slowly like a seasoned diver, and see the beauty that is at the bottom.

We are like water in so many ways; and well…we are mostly water in any case. Aren’t we?
